O Applet Indicatore, se come me avete gnome (e Ubuntu) in italiano. Si fa così:
(qualsivoglia editor siete soliti usare) oppure
vim /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications/thunderbird
Ivi scrivete:
/usr/share/applications/thunderbird.desktop
Fatto, tutto a posto 
‘Sto giochetto funziona tanto col 2 che col 3, di thunderbird. Ma anche con tutte quelle applicazioni che trovate in /usr/share/application e finiscono con .desktop
